Injury Update: What is the status for Ole Miss guard Matthew Murrell?
Matthew Murrell returned to Ole Miss for one final season in what was a surprise move late in the Summer. So far his final year is off to a tough start.
Murrell did not play against Lindenwood this past Saturday with Ole Miss citing a lower body injury. After the game head coach Chris Beard called it a “day-to-day” type of situation.
On Thursday while meeting with the media head of the Rebels trip to Biloxi to play Southern Miss on Saturday Beard provided a new update. One that was not any more encouraging than the previous one five days ago.
“Matt continues to progress. I don’t know if day-to-day is the way I’d call it. Maybe two day-to-two day if there’s such thing,” Beard said. “We’ll see how Matt feels later today. Don’t want to tell you that he won’t play Saturday and all of a sudden he shows up. But… probably doubtful for Saturday, although I never underestimate Matt Murrell can do, physically.”
This would be the third game Murrell misses if he does not play against the Golden Eagles on Saturday. He sat out the ‘Tad Pad’ throwback game against South Alabama on November 12 due to injury, too.

Through seven games played Murrell is still the third-best scorer for Ole Miss, averaging 12.6 points per game behind Sean Pedulla‘s 14 points and Jaylen ‘JuJu’ Murray‘s 13.1 points per game. Murrell has pulled down 18 rebounds and recorded 12 assists and even has a pair of blocks in the early season.
“He’s improving. Just trying to get healthy this time of year,” Beard added. “We need Matt to have the best year he’s ever had in the SEC and he’s had some good ones. So, right now I’d say kind of day-to-day, if that makes sense.”
No. 19 Ole Miss (8-1) and Southern Mississippi (4-5) will tip off at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday inside the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
