Jacob Gonzalez named to Preseason All-SEC Team by Perfect Game
The Ole Miss baseball team has started individual workouts ahead of full preseason practices as the 2023 season and its national title defense is a month away but more accolades continue to come in for Jacob Gonzalez.
The junior shortstop earned another preseason honor on Monday when Perfect Game named him to its Preseason All-SEC Team.
The latest is one of many preseason awards and notoriety Gonzalez has garnered, including a pair of All-American honors. Gonzalez is coming off a season where he helped lead Ole Miss to its first national championship in program history after a historic run through the NCAA Baseball tournament last summer.
LSU and Tennessee are well represented with the Tigers landing four players on the team, including Dylan Crews being projected as the Player of the Year.
In 2022 Gonzalez hit .273 for 18 home runs and 53 runs batted in. Gonzalez’ sophomore campaign was considered a down year, but relative to the freshman breakout season he had, even though he hit six more home runs and was only three RBIs shy of tying the 2021 mark.

Still, Gonzalez is another high MLB Draft prospect for Ole Miss.
Jim Callis of MLB.com has Gonzalez ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect for this summer’s draft and the top prospect at his position.
Despite a bumpy start to his 2023 training with an injury sustained during fall practices, Gonzalez is expected to be ‘full go’ according to Ole Miss hitting coach Mike Clement who spoke exclusively to the Ole Miss Spirit last week.
Ole Miss opens the 2023 season on Feb. 17 hosting Delaware at 4 p.m. CT in the first of a three-game weekend series. The Rebels have been ranked in preseason polls as high as No. 6, which came from Perfect Game.
