Campbell Smithwick committed to the Rebels back in 2020 when he was still living in Conway, S.C. Fast forward two years and the 6-foot, 185 pound 2023 commit has moved to Oxford, Miss., and transferred to Oxford High School to play his final two years of high school baseball.

Well, it didn’t take long for the blue chip catcher to introduce himself to the Oxford Chargers fans, crushing two tape measure home runs to start the season.

The first one came last weekend against Amory (Miss.) in the Houston Jamboree. It was the first pitch Smithwick saw in his first game in an Oxford uniform. And he did not miss it. At all.

The second homer was in Oxford’s home opener against Kirk Academy (Miss.) on Saturday. The top-ranked catcher didn’t miss this one either. Smithwick went with the pitch and took the pitcher deep to left-center.

Ole Miss has an impressive lineage of talented backstops that have come through Oxford and the former Palmetto State prospect intends on being the next in line. Smithwick and his Oxford teammates won Saturday’s contest, 7-3, and are now 2-0 on the young season.

Despite finishing 9-0 in 6A Region 2 play, the 2021 Chargers went 24-4 last season before losing to Tupelo in the second round of the 2021 MHSAA Class 6A playoffs. Smithwick and sophomore right handed pitcher and fellow Ole Miss commit, Brady Stinnett, will look to lead Oxford to its first state title since 2016 when Ole Miss signees Jason Barber, Thomas Dillard, Grae Kessinger and Houston Roth helped the Chargers win the back end of back-to-back Class 5A titles.
