LSU transfer Corey Chest committed to Ole Miss, On3’s Joe Tipton reported Sunday. This is the first commitment for Chris Beard and the Rebels from the transfer portal.

He redshirted his first season in Baton Rouge then played a big role this season. Chest is fresh off an Alabama visit while programs like Auburn, Texas A&M and Georgia have also come calling.

Chest made 26 appearances for LSU this season, including 19 starts. He averaged 6.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 60.7% from the field. LSU head coach Matt McMahon praised the former four-star in the class of 2023 after his strong play against Alabama this year.

“He just has a natural feel for how to go chase rebounds and pursue the ball, and he continues to do it at a high level,” McMahon said. “One of the better instinctual rebounders I’ve been around in my time.”

Beard and his staff have work to do with most of the roster out of eligibility. The Rebels signed two high school players then will have to round out the roster with more top flight transfers to keep the momentum rolling.

“Yeah, I would think so. You look at our roster, a lot of the guys with that SR senior next to them. I think the program is in good shape. We got a chance to return a couple of really good players. Signed two really good high school players early,” Beard said before the NCAA Tournament. “We’re in no different position than everybody else. It’s college basketball’s roster management now. With that, I’ve always been a guy that thinks about the opportunity. I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the challenges. That is what it is. I don’t set the rules.”
