Matt Corral provides advice and examples for Ole Miss' Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart
Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart are embroiled in one of the closest quarterback competitions that Ole Miss as seen in recent years. Throughout the process they each have received advice and learned from the guy they are both trying to replace.
While Matt Corral is busy with his pre-draft preparations he has also spent time with both Dart and Altmyer in separate times to provide any pearls of wisdom he may can offer.
It makes perfect sense as Corral and Altmyer were teammates for a season and Corral is familiar with Dart. With the two rising sophomores seemingly neck and neck in the quarterback battle they are both very receptive and appreciative of anything Corral can tell them.
For Altmyer, getting to share a quarterback room with Corral for a year helped him and also helped cultivate a deep respect for the former Rebel.
“Matt gave me so much,” Altmyer said. “The competitor and player, the teammate, the workman attitude that he brought everyday was so contagious. The things that he’s told me I’ll always keep between me and him.

“I think in life there’s truly two different types of people and I think Matt really embodied those two and those two. I think in like people seek to understand and I think some are really understood and I think he had both of those qualities. When he walked in the room he was understood. He commanded the room. He commanded the ball on the field. He commanded the team, but he is always wanting to understand more about himself, the game, his teammates and about life itself. It was truly inspiring.”
When head coach Lane Kiffin was deep into recruiting Dart to make the move to Oxford after the former Southern California quarterback entered the portal, Corral also played his part in helping fill his shoes.
Dart is from Utah but did spent about a year in Los Angeles on the Trojans roster. Making the move to from the west coast to Mississippi can be an adjustment, but Corral – the Southern California native – helped Dart and talked with him during that transition.
“Me and Matt were in contact a lot when I was trying to decide between schools,” Dart said. “Obvioiusly he was coached by (former Rebel offensive coordinator Jeff) Lebby and he was here. So me and Matt had a lot of conversations and I think i cay say with confidence he likes the South more than he likes the West Coast. He had nothing but really good things to say about Mississippi.”
As for Corral himself, he is set to visit a slew of NFL teams this week with the NFL Draft a little over two weeks away. Last week it was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Corral would be meeting with Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
