Rebel Rewind: An Ole Miss practice in the life of first-year Rebel co-defensive coordinator Maurice Crum
Ole Miss broke in myriad new players and coaches over a month-plus of spring football practices, which wrapped with the annual Grove Bowl game in April.
Not only did we get our first look at transfers Jaxson Dart (USC), Michael Trigg (USC), Khari Coleman (TCU), Jared Ivey (Georgia Tech) and many, many others, but now-third year Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin rolled out his revamped coaching staff.
Among them was Maurice Crum, formerly of Western Kentucky.
Crum was essentially hired to replace DJ Durkin in the offseason. However, Chris Partridge, one of the few holdovers remaining from Kiffin’s original staff, was elevated to primary defensive coordinator. He’ll continue to handle the safeties, but he’s added primary play-caller to his responsibilities.
Durkin left for Texas A&M.
Crum will assist Partridge in game-planning, etc., while tutoring the linebackers. He was Western Kentucky defensive coordinator last season, when the Hilltoppers ranked eighth in college football in passing yards allowed (177.3 per game) and finished No. 28 in total yards (348.7 per game) and No. 41 in points allowed (25.3 per game).

Crum was described by On3 national analyst Matt Zenitz as a “rising star” upon his hiring at Ole Miss.
Crum, 35, had been at Western Kentucky since 2017.
He started off as linebackers coach before being promoted to co-DC in 2020 and then to defensive coordinator a year later. He helped the Hilltoppers to a 9-5 overall record. They held seven of their final eight regular season opponents to 21 points or fewer.
He’s the son of former Miami All-American linebacker Maurice Crum, Sr., and made 42 straight starts as a linebacker at Notre Dame back during his playing days. He was a captain for the Fighting Irish in both 2007 and 2008.
Crum is one of only 24 two-time captains in Notre Dame’s 135-year history as a football program.
