Ole Miss tried Micah Davis as a wide receiver, returner and part-time running back this season.

Apparently the Rebels could never find the right fit.

Davis got into the NCAA Transfer Portal on Saturday, the final day for new entrants. The second window opens in April. However, the market will remain quite active well into January, especially as teams are eliminated from the postseason.

All players in bowls or College Football Playoff games are granted a five-day window to get in once their seasons come to an end.

“You could have teams in the playoff making it into January and playing in the playoff get beat and players go in as late as mid-January,” said Walker Jones, the leader of Ole Miss’ NIL (name, image and likeness) initiative, the Grove Collective.

“The portal won’t close for a while, and there will probably be some really good players playing in the playoff or playing in these playoffs go in late. You’ve kind of got to keep some dry powder. You can’t get frustrated. You can’t get nervous or overreach too soon, ‘cause you’ve really got to play the long game for what could come here in January.”

Ole Miss has put together the nation’s No. 2 overall portal class, according to On3.

Within the 17-player haul is a trio of wide receivers: Oklahoma State’s De’Zhaun Stribling, Alabama’s Caleb Odom and Wake Forest’s Deuce Alexander.

The Rebels also signed 5-star 2025 recruit Caleb Cunningham, Mississippi’s top recruit. Cunningham was joined by 4-star Winston Watkins, Jr., and 3-stars Dillon Alfred and Samari Reed.

Davis is one of the more notable Rebels to transfer. Safety Louis Moore returned to Indiana after one season. Long-time right tackle Micah Pettus was dismissed and is now at Florida State. Safety Jadon Canady, previously of Tulane, got in two weeks ago.

“We kind of knew, for the most part, the guys that would possibly want to go look around,” Jones said. “I want our fans to understand: It’s not a negative when a guy goes in the portal. Sometimes they’ve had a change in their lives, they may have graduated or they just want to go play.

“For the most part, the ones that have gone in, we’ve been fully supportive of, our coaches have. Have done a great job of encouraging and supporting those players when they make that difficult decision.

“I don’t think there have been any major surprises. We’ve had a high success rate of retaining the players that are major contributors to us.”

Ole Miss (9-3, 5-3 SEC) wraps the 2024-25 season against Duke (9-3, 5-3 ACC) in the Gator Bowl.

Kickoff in Jacksonville, Florida, on January 2, 2025 is 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

The Rebels are aiming for their third 10-win season in four years. Every major contributor save for three (Pettus, Canady and linebacker Chris ‘Pooh’ Paul) opted into playing in the bowl.

Davis appeared in every game this season and finished with five catches for 57 yards. Davis, a one-time transfer from Utah State, also served as the Rebels’ primary punt returner (18 total). He’s the 16th Ole Miss Rebel and first wide receiver to enter the portal.
