No. 15 Ole Miss keeps the consistency going with win over Memphis for fourth straight

After a midweek setback last week in Pearl No. 15 Ole Miss has rattled off four straight wins and looking to have its offense working at a consistent rate
Tuesday’s 7-5 win over Memphis on Tuesday at Oxford-University Stadium was the latest in a sign that maybe the Rebels (19-5) have found something they can string together as the middle stretch of the season arrives.
Brayden Randle has not been an every-game player but his number was called against the Tigers and the second baseman delivered. He went 2-for-4 at the plate with a career high three runs batted in. He also had a double that turned into a triple on the throw home.
Defensively, Randle helped turn the Rebels two double plays for a good night in the field.
“I haven’t been out there in a minute but I guess it’s true what coach says, and everybody else says, the ball’s going to find you,” Randle said. “I’m just proud I was helpful to make plays and help the team win.”
Ole Miss put up a clean sheet with zero error in the game
The rest of the team accounted for six of the eight hits with designated hitter Judd Utermark joining Randle with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Left fielder Mitchell Sanford and catcher Campbell Smithwick had a home run each. Sanford’s was a solo shot in the eighth inning for his sixth on the year. Smithwick’s second long ball of the season was a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second inning.
The bottom-half of the lineup went a combined 5-for-11 with six RBIs.
“We’ve swung it well, especially on the weekends, really of late. Maybe the last few weeks and when you’re doing that it’s not just from one piece or just a spot in the lineup,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “If you’re putting up runs like we have over the last couple of weeks usually it’s throughout the lineup and certainly that’s been evident.”

In relief duty behind starter Gunnar Dennis it was a career night for Hudson Calhoun on the mound. The sophomore right-hander struck out five Tiger batters for a new best in a Rebels uniform.
Taylor Rabe, Ryn Rodriguez and Landon Waters also got bullpen action on a night were Ole Miss was short-handed due to the short week and the high volume of relievers who threw this past weekend at Missouri.
“I thought we pitched it really well,” Bianco said. “It’s baseball and sometimes balls find holes but I thought all the guys kind of were in control of the game. It wasn’t like we were walking people or getting banged around. They all pitched like they belonged. I know that sounds like not a compliment but it’s tough, it’s tough for those guys and tonight we were short-handed.”
Ole Miss will host Florida (18-9, 0-6 Southeastern Conference) for a home SEC series this weekend, starting on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
