The first Ole Miss game week of the football season is in full swing as head coach Lane Kiffin held his first coach’s show on the Downtown Square on Thursday.

Kiffin made his debut appearance on ‘Reb Talk’ for the 2023 season and covered a wide-range of topics from his outlook on the depth of his team to even discussing Taylor Swift’s very lucrative Eras Tour.

When the conversation turned to Ole Miss and its makeup of a roster mixed with returners and and newcomers Kiffin continued to boast how he is in a different mindset currently than he was heading into last season.

“I feel really excited about it. Better than I did a year ago,” Kiffin said. “There’s a lot to be seen, but a lot of these guys have played. I feel like last year there were some potential guys who hadn’t really played as much at other places. Most of these guys, especially defensive guys, have already played at a different program. So you’ve seen them, now they’re older players and mature. I think it’s going to go really well.”

Kiffin’s confidence in his full roster is something that has been the theme as fall camp progressed through the month of August. Now with a little under 48 hours to go until Ole Miss kicks off its season that confidence appears to be at an all-time high.

When answering a fan question about which offensive player might surprise this season Kiffin replied with veteran receiver Jordan Watkins.

“I think he’s going to have an amazing year,” Kiffin said of Watkins. “That’s not really a surprise, but he is. We call him ‘Third and Watkins.'”

The topic of the Ole Miss starting quarterback also covered and Kiffin continued the mystery going.

A fan question attempted to be clever and posed their question as a fill in the blank, asking Kiffin to name who the quarterback will be on Saturday.

This topic is one that has boiled over from Kiffin using fall camp as a backdrop to continue to not name a starter between Jaxson Dart and Spencer Sanders to now hours away from kick off and still no public decision announced.

Kiffin offered up a vague answer but one that tried to provide a clue.

“I can say this. The starting quarterback started somewhere else last year,” Kiffin replied.

At first the answer made it seem he was giving it away that Sanders was going to be the guy, having started at Oklahoma State. But then seemed to amend it by saying the starting quarterback is a returning start, giving off that he could have meant Dart who started at Ole Miss a season ago.

The mystery of who the starting quarterback will be continues on to Saturday afternoon against Mercer.
