Hunter Elliott is facing a second setback this season after returning to the mound last weekend following an injury that sidelined him two months.

The Ole Miss ace is not in the starting rotation for this weekend’s series against Georgia and not set to be available out of the bullpen. An Ole Miss spokesman confirmed the news on Thursday.

Returning against No. 1 LSU this past Saturday from a sprained UCL, Elliott went one inning-plus before being relieved in the second after loading the bases. The left-hander threw 49 pitches and walked five of the 10 batters he faced.

“I felt fine. Obviously expecting better,” Elliott said bluntly. “Walked too many people, threw too many pitches, was on a pitch count and reached it way sooner than I’d like to. …I don’t think it was layoff time. I’ve taken time off in my career. Just wasn’t good enough.”

In the days after the start Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said Elliott was sore from his first competitive throwing in over two months. The update Bianco provided after Tuesday’s loss to Mississippi State did not pointly say Elliott could face another injury blow but hinted towards a potential cautious backtrack in the rehabilitation process.

“Tough after that first time out and just going through rehab now,” Bianco said. “Trying to bounce back from that. It’s hard to say what role he’ll play this weekend.”

The role now is one that will be sitting in the dugout. Elliot is reportedly going to visit with another doctor next week.

In Elliott’s two starts this season he has worked six innings, giving up seven runs — all earned — off five hits. He has struck out 12 and walked six other batters.

Ole Miss (21-10, 3-15 SEC) and Georgia (23-18, 7-11) start the weekend series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+
