The Flagship: Ole Miss baseball wins opening SEC series, women's hoops earns 7-seed
On this Monday edition of “The Flaghship”, Grayson Weir and I recap the big-time weekend for Ole Miss baseball and Coach Yo and the Rebels. Mike Bianco’s club took two-of-three from 20th-ranked South Carolina. And women’s hoops earned a 7-seed in the Albany 1 Region in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
OMSpirit’s Ben Garrett and Bianco give you their take of the opening weekend in conference play for Ole Miss. Most notably, Andrew Fischer’s big day Saturday.
“He’s always impressive,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said of Fischer after the game. Bianco is in his 24th season leading the Rebels. “He’s a special talent and brings so much energy. A lot of power, and a guy that can really get some good swings off.
“If you’re going to try to bat a right-handed lineup, he’s one of the left-handers that get to stay in.”
Sunday’s loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Rebels, who had won 13 of their previous 14 games. The Gamecocks, in salvaging the series, recovered from back-to-back losses after rolling into the weekend on the heels of six straight wins.

Ole Miss (23-8) secured its first 12-wins in Southeastern Conference play in program history and locked up a third trip to the big dance. Sunday’s bid makes it the first time the Rebels have gone to the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years since 1994-96.
This year marks the 20th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
“I remember looking back to my freshman year. We went on a little streak winning some games and coach Yo had us watch the show,” said senior forward Madison Scott. “We didn’t get in and feeling that way, we didn’t want to feel that anymore. With consecutive years of getting in that also fueled us. To watch the show and see where we’re going early, it’s just day and night. It’s a feeling that you want to have all the time.”
