Ole Miss men’s basketball has been without Jarkel Joiner for the majority of its last three games and will continue to be without their leading scorer for a while.

During the Rebels game at Texas A&M, it was announced on the television broadcast that Joiner is scheduled to have a procedure on his back on Thursday and miss four to six weeks.

That information has since been confirmed with Ole Miss.

Joiner has been dealing with a lower back issue since suffering an injury during practice on Dec. 28. He did not practice for the rest of the week and did not make the trip to Knoxville for the Rebels game against Tennesse on Jan. 5.

During the game against Mississippi State on Saturday Joiner was listed as active and did see about six minutes of action, but finished with a zeroed out stat line.

“Jarkel and Robert (Allen) are the heart and soul of our team,” said Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis after the Mississippi State game. “I’ve never been on a team where the guys are in the locker room every day, practice court on a Tuesday at 3:30 and they’ve led our team. Now to kind of not have them both, I’ve never had that on a team. Kind of the heart and soul of our toughest guys.

“It’s not COVID-related. So what happens is you’ve got regular basketball injuries and it’s hard.”

Joiner did not travel with the team to College Station for Tuesday’s game against the Aggies.

Through 13 games played this season, Joiner is averaging 13.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

Freshman Daeshun Ruffin has gotten the start in Joiner’s absense with Matthew Murrel, Louis Rodriguez and Tye Fagan also getting starts at guard.
