Ole Miss center John Bol is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal after one season in Oxford, sources confirmed Travis Branham’s report to Ole Miss Spirit.

This year, Bol appeared in 17 games as a freshman, averaging 1.1 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 4.1 minutes per game.

Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard described Bol as being just on the fringe of getting more time in games for the Rebels. Instead, Bol will do that elsewhere as he looks for a bigger role.

“With John it starts with a physical standpoint — gaining weight, maintaining it and getting stronger and more athletic in terms of foot speed and his balance and things like that,” Beard said in February. “He’s doing a really good job. John Bol works on game days, he works on the day before games and constantly his player development is equally important to the next game on our schedule. John’s done a great job embracing that.”

Bol was one of just 24 McDonald’s All-Americans in the 2024 recruiting class and the third signed by Ole Miss out of high school. Coming out of high school, he was a Top 100 prospect and a Top 10 center.

After just one season with the Rebels, Bol is moving on. It’s a sign of the times in college basketball.

Before the NCAA Tournament began, Beard compared the sport’s current landscape to the popular Taylor Sheridan shows like Yellowstone, 1923 and 1883. The lawless shows with vigilante justice at times brought to mind the crazy world of college athletics with the transfer portal.

“It’s just like the Wild Wild West right now with no sheriffs. I watched a lot of those shows in the last year with 1883, is that one? And Yellowstone. There’s another one in there, a sneaky another one in there, 1923,” he said. “So while I was actually watching those shows, just really interesting the history of our country, law enforcement in the towns and all that. I actually did think about the portal a few times when I was watching those shows because again, we got some rules, but I’m not sure who the sheriff is.”
