Ole Miss football’s defense has another new coach in its ranks after head coach Lane Kiffin officially announced the hiring of Sam Carter as its new cornerbacks coach.

Carter is coming from Arkansas, where he held the same position for the past two season, and replacing former cornerbacks coach Terrell Buckley. Last week, Buckley announced he and Ole Miss were “parting ways” after two seasons.

During the 2020 season, the Razorback secondary was one of the top in the SEC. They finished with 13 interceptions that season, the most in the SEC and 13th most in FBS, and 26 totals during Carter’s tenure.

Prior to going to Arkansas, Carter served as defensive quality control and analyst at Misssouri under head coach Barry Odom.

Carter is the latest piece of an ever-changing coaching staff for Kiffin this offseason.

Other movements on the defensive side include co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach D.J. Durkin leaving after the Sugar Bowl to become the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M.

Former Rebel defensive coach Chris Kiffin returned to Oxford to be with his brother and father, Monte Kiffin, as the new co-defensive coordinator with Chris Partridge. Kiffin is also taking over linebacker coaching duties.

The reshuffling of the coaching deck also took place on offense with Charlie Weis, Jr. becoming the new co-offensive coordinator, replacing Jeff Lebby who went to Oklahoma for the same position. Who the other co-offensive coordinator with Weis will be has not been revealed.

Marquel Blackwell took over the running backs room, coming from Houston and replacing Kevin Smith who left for the same job at Miami.

Nick Savage was also hired as the new strength and conditioning coach, taking over for Wilson Love who left for the same position at Oregon.
