Oak Grove (Miss.) quarterback AJ Maddox had been committed to Texas A&M practically all year. But, after Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. extended an offer to Maddox a little over a week ago and the entire family came to Oxford, Miss., for an official visit, his mind was changed.

Saturday, the three-star signal caller made the call and flipped his commitment to Ole Miss. Maddox officially announced his decommitment from the Aggies Friday. Then, it didn’t take long for him to become a part of Lane Kiffin‘s 2024 class.

Per the On3 Industry Ranking, Maddox is the No. 583 overall prospect, No. 39 quarterback and No. 20 player in Mississippi. The 6-foot-2, 180 pound prospect just won the 7A state title after throwing for 3,346 yards and 43 touchdowns. He also ran for 515 yards and was named the title game MVP.

Oak Grove finished the year 13-1 and defeated a red hot Starkville team last weekend. He finished 15-for-20 for 162 yards and a score.

Anthony Maddox has a lot to like in his game. He draws inspiration from some of the best.

“I’ve always been internally motivated. You don’t want to have outside factors around you, you want to have those key components, composure. I think I have those things,” Maddox said. “You look at quarterbacks nowadays, you need to be a dual-threat, be able to move around. Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young. Those are guys I look up to you. Playmaking ability, spreading the ball around.

“Daniels is a guy who I think I am very similar to,” Maddox said. “All due respect to Jaxson Dart and others around the country, but I’m a different kind of quarterback than him. Daniels and I have a similar body makeup, build, playing style. That’s the kind of quarterback I want to be. He’s probably going to win the Heisman.”

He will be a December signee.

Oak Grove High School QB AJ Maddox (9) runs the ball during the 7A tournament game against Brandon High School in the 2023 high school football championships on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2023 in Brandon, MS.

Maddox currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $23K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
