Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Key Lawrence (12) intercepts a pass intended for Cincinnati Bearcats wide receiver Evan Prater (3) in the second quarter of the NCAA Big 12 football game between the Cincinnati Bearcats and the Oklahoma Sooners at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023.

Oklahoma safety Key Lawrence entered the NCAA Transfer Portal Monday. On Tuesday, he was in Oxford, Miss., on an official visit to Ole Miss. And on Thursday, he committed to the Rebels and defensive coordinator Pete Golding.

The newest Rebel commit joins Illinois cornerback Taz Nicholson in the secondary commit column for the 2024 transfer portal class.

Lawrence played three seasons for the Sooners after transferring in from Tennessee following the 2020 season which was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. He totaled 149 tackles, three forced fumbles and three interceptions for the Sooners in 35 games.

As a recruit, he was the No. 88 overall prospect in the 2020 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average which utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was ranked as the No. 5 safety in the country and No. 1 recruit in Tennessee.

As a high school senior, Key Lawrence was a Top 100 prospect coveted by many.

He was selected for both the 2020 All-American Bowl and Polynesian Bowl. Lawrence was named to the TSWA Division II Class AAA All-State Team his junior and senior seasons after totaling 37 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss in 2019.

In 2023, he made 44 tackles, defended five passes, four tackles for loss and snagged two interceptions.

Key Lawrence brings tenacity in the run game and superb coverage skills.

Golding was adamant about getting longer and older in the secondary upon his arrival at Ole Miss. And his back end will add in both criteria with the addition of the Nashville, Tenn., recruit. Ole Miss is set to lose at least two starters in Deantre Prince and Zamari Walton and John Saunders has yet to decide if he wants to return. Lawrence brings a ton of cachet to a group which has some budding talent and is sure to add more from the portal.
