Ole Miss signee Bryson Walters named Mississippi 4A Defensive Player of the Year
After fulfilling a lifelong dream on Wednesday when he signed with Ole Miss, Itawamba Agricultural (Miss.) linebacker Bryson Walters received an honor from the state of Mississippi.
The Ole Miss signee was presented the award for 4A Defensive Player of the Year. Walters was also named to the All-State team. The 6-foot-2, 220 pound prospect unfortunately suffered a knee injury this fall. Prior to the ACL injury, the future Rebel led the entire state in tackles.
Walters finished his high school career as the program’s all-time leading tackler. In 45 games, he notched 491 tackles, 277 of those solo and 214 assists. He also tacked on 55 tackles for loss, 51 hurries, 13 forced fumbles, nine sacks, six fumble recoveries, five interceptions and two defensive touchdowns.
Last season alone, Walters finished with 140 tackles and 18 tackles for loss.
Bryson Walters forms an in-state linebacker tandem with Jarcoby Hopson.
Hopson was named Mississippi’s 6A Athlete of the Year Friday. Both were also selected to represent the state of Mississippi in the MS/AL All-Star Game.
Walters received an offer from Pete Golding after an impressive camp in August. Afterwards, he had a feeling Ole Miss would be the school for him.

“I’ve always dreamed about playing for a Power 4 school and they were first and it means a lot,” Walters said. “I knew I wanted to go ahead and commit early so I could focus on my senior season. Ole Miss loves me and it’s what is best for me.”
Golding’s defense was elite this season. The Rebels were No. 1 in the SEC in both sacks and tackles for loss. This was key in sealing the deal with Walters.
“Everything they do scheme-wise fits me,” Walters said. “They’re recruiting me to be an inside linebacker. The scheme was a big reason why I ultimately chose Ole Miss.
“I love how coach Golding coaches,” Walters said. “I love coach (Lane) Kiffin and the entire staff. They’re all easy to get along with and I always feel like family when I’m there. It’s home.”
