Former Ole Miss catcher Nick Fortes capped the month of May in a big way for himself and the Miami Marlins on Wednesday.

Fortes secured the walk-off hit that gave the Marlins a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The hit was the first of the night for Fortes who was 0-for-3 prior to the at-bat in the bottom of the ninth.

Third baseman Jean Segura got a RBI-single that scored the first run of the night for the Marlins, setting the stage for Fortes who got the second straight RBI single off Giants closer Josh Hader.

Before the pair of hits from Segura and Fortes the Marlins had been held to four hits the previous eight innings.

The Marlins (29-27) closed out the month by winning five of their last seven games and are currently tied for second with the New York Mets in the National League East division. They are four games back of the division-leading Atlanta Braves.

Fortes is in his third MLB season and finished May strong at the plate.

The Marlins catcher hit .279 (17-for-61) for the month with eight of those hits coming in four of the last six games. There were five multi-hit games for Fortes this month, including four games with two hits and one game with three.

Fortes recorded seven RBI in the month, including three in three of his last four games. He also hit two home runs.

For the 2023 season Fortes is hitting .243 (27-for-111) for 10 RBI and three home runs. He has also scored nine runs this season.

Miami and Fortes wrap up a three-game home series with the Giants on Thursday before hosting the Oakland Athletics for three games.
