The full schedule is not out yet but Ole Miss men’s basketball head coach Chris Beard has announced another game for the upcoming season.

On Monday Beard revealed Ole Miss will participate in the 2023 Hall of Fame series, taking on California on December 16 in San Antonio at the AT&T Center.

This is the second non-conference game that has been announced by Beard for his first season at Ole Miss. Earlier this summer Beard confirmed that the Rebels will play Southern Mississippi in Biloxi on December 23.

Working to expand the non-conference portion of the schedule is something Beard has worked on since getting hired in March. Playing stronger competition in neutral environments to help strengthen the schedule for NCAA Tournament resume purposes being one reason.

“I think we have a responsibility to take our brand and take our team around parts of the state,” Beard said during a speaking event earlier this month. “We want to play a really good schedule in terms of style of play. Going back to the ultimate goal of winning six games in three weekends. We know we’re going to play against different styles. So our non-conference schedule, we’re always challenging ourselves to get ready for SEC play.”

Ole Miss and California have met once before, playing each other in 2011 as part of the NIT. The Rebels fell to the Bears, 77-74.

Beard also noted that there are some interesting teams on the schedule but a lot were inherited from agreements made with former Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis.

The rest of the schedule will be released soon but Ole Miss does have its conference opponents for the 2023-24 season after the league announced them this month.

Ole Miss will start its first season under Beard in November with preseason camp beginning in October.
