Ole Miss Athletics Media Relations | CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The Ole Miss men’s golf team wrapped up play in the difficult Cabo Collegiate Invitational by earning fifth place on the team leaderboard, ending the tournament 22-under par on the week (274-279-277–830).

The Rebels’ tournament would end with a total of 64 birdies on the week, ranking third amongst a field of nine total teams that were ranked in the Golfstat Top 25. In par-4 scoring, Ole Miss would end the tournament by leading the field in the category finishing 13-under in the category.

“We didn’t play the way we would have liked today, but each of these guys fought their tails off,” said head coach Chris Malloy “For one-under par to be our worst round says a lot about our team. We seem to have a different player lead us each week, which is the sign of a really good team. We will get back and work on some things and be ready to go in less than two weeks.”

Earning his first top 20 finish of the 2021-22 campaign for the Rebels, senior Sarut Vongchaisit logged his third-consecutive round in the 60s on Tuesday by wrapping up with a 68 (-3) to finish tied for 12th overall on the individual leaderboard. At seven-under par, Vongchaisit’s tournament would end with the senior tied for second in the field in par-5 scoring (-9) on the week.

Vongchaisit’s three-day score of 206 (-7) marks a new career-low 54-hole total for the Bangkok, Thailand, native, having set his previous career-low of 208 at the Puerto Rico Classic just two weeks ago.

Finishing right behind Vongchaisit on the leaderboard for the Rebels was senior Jackson Suber, who battled his way back from a triple bogey on Hole 13 to still conclude the day under par with a 70 (-1). Suber sank a team-high 16 birdies on the week, with six coming during his final round of play on Tuesday, to help him claim a share of 20th place at the Cove Club Golf Course.

Redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks’ time in Puerto Rico would end with the Walnut, Mississippi, native earning multiple career-best marks including a new career-low 54-hole score of 210 (-3) and career-best finish, tying for 31st. Meeks also had earned a career-low 18-hole score of 68 (-3) in his opening round of the tournament, and proceeded to wrap up his tournament on Tuesday with a round of 70 (-1).

Matching his season-best 54-hole total of 213, Evan Brown’s four-birdie final round saw him settle into a tie for 42nd place to cap off his first tournament back from injury for the Rebels (68-75-70–213). Brown would rank second amongst the Rebels in par-5 scoring in the tournament, finishing three-under on those holes.

Putting together his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, sophomore Brett Schell rounded out play for the Rebels by logging a 69 (-2) in his final round in Cabo, sinking six birdies in the process. Schell’s tournament would end with him earning a share of 70th place individually with a three-day score of 223 (+10).

Claiming the team title in Cabo was Vanderbilt, whose red-hot round of 265 (-19) on day three launched the Commodores up from fifth place to take the Cabo Collegiate team championship.

Following a short break, the Rebels will return to action to take part in the Louisiana Classic hosted at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana. The tournament will run March 14-15.
