The Ole Miss quarterback room is getting thinned out as the transfer portal opens up on Monday.

Walker Howard is set to hit the portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, making him the second quarterback that will not be in Oxford next Fall.

After two seasons in Oxford after transferring from LSU ahead of the 2023 season Howard will be looking to land at a new home once he officially enters the portal this week.

Last season Howard was the backup to Jaxson Dart with freshman Austin Simmons serving as the third string and ultimately redshirting. This year Howard was usurped by Simmons who became Dart’s backup early into the season.

In 2025 it feels as if Simmons will be the starter or at the very least competing for the starting job with anyone Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin brings in from the portal this month, or in the April window.

This season Howard played in two games — Furman and Wake Forest — and two pass attempts that were both incomplete. He also played in two games last season.

Howard wraps up his Ole Miss career with 56 passing yards and a 75 percent completion rate, completing three of four pass attempts.

Currently, Ole Miss has two scholarship quarterbacks remaining entering spring drills.

Simmons will be a redshirt sophomore next year and AJ Maddox should be a redshirt freshman as he did not play in a game this year.

This season Simmons threw for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns while rushing for 14 yards on five carries. The biggest touchdown occurred when Simmons led Ole Miss down the field in the second possession of the game against Georgia to tie it up before Dart returned to the game.

As of now Kiffin does not have a quartback as part of his 2025 signing class, which seems to have been by design after missing out on flipping Deuce Knight from Auburn.

Kiffin will more than likely go portal shopping this month and also can see who might hit the portal after spring drills next April.
