Ole Miss second baseman Peyton Chatagnier to enter the transfer portal
Next February is going to be the start of a season of change for the Ole Miss baseball program, which was already known but the departure of another key player to the transfer portal all but cements it.
Second baseman Peyton Chatagnier announced on Friday his plans to enter the portal and look for a new team for his final year of eligibility at the collegiate level.
The news came from Chatagnier’s Twitter account and is the second key contributor over the last few seasons for Ole Miss that will seek a new home for the 2024 season.
This comes after outfielder TJ McCants announced last week his intentions to also leave the portal.
Chatagnier was an important piece of Ole Miss’ run last June to its first national championship in program history. During the 11 games in the NCAA Tournament Chatagnier hit .309 (13-for-42) for 11 runs batted in.
His biggest contribution came in the Coral Gables Regional where 10 of those RBIs occurred and two home runs.
“The last 4 years at Ole Miss have been greater than I could have ever imagined,” Chatagnier’s post read. “From day 1 of stepping onto campus, I have been welcomed and supported by the greatest fan base.
“This decision has not been easy and has required a lot of thought and prayers, but with that being said, I have decided to enter the transfer portal for my last year of eligibility.”

Chatagnier hit .261 for 26 RBIs and 10 home runs in his 2023 campaign, which will now be his final one at Ole Miss. He has the potential to be selected in next month’s MLB Draft and will provide Chatagnier yet another interesting decision to make if that occurs.
For Ole Miss, Chatagnier’s decision means the infield will have a very new flavor to it with new faces in 2024.
Shortstop All-American Jacob Gonzalez is a Top 10 draft prospect and first baseman Anthony Calarco is out of eligibility after transferring to Ole Miss from Northwestern this season.
Ethan Lege might be back at third base, but depends on if he gets drafted and likes where that occurs within the 20-round draft.
Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco was already entering a crucial offseason this summer, starting with a June where there is no baseball on the calendar and only the recruiting trail awaits. The transfer portal is key, plus some dominoes to fall the Rebels way as it pertains to high school commits.
The loss of Chatagnier also means next year’s Ole Miss roster might be underclassmen heavy with a lot of the experienced and older players no longer in the clubhouse.
