The top player in the state of Mississippi signed with Ole Miss on Wednesday. The following day Caleb Cunningham helped Choctaw County make history.

For the first time in school history the Chargers secured a state championship in football, defeating Noxubee County 34-27 to start the weekend of MHSAA championship games at M.M. Roberts Stadium on the University of Southern Mississippi campus.

To nobody’s surprise Cunningham was a key part in securing the Class 3A state title.

The top receiver in the state hauled in four catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Cunningham also had seven carries for 42 yards.

The score came in the third quarter when Cunningham took a screen pass from Chargers quarterback KJ Cork 39 yards.

Thursday put a bow on Cunningham’s high school career with a total of 942 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He will now transition to basketball season and finish out his senior year. He will report to Ole Miss in the Summer.

Once Cunningham gets to Ole Miss the expectations are he will be an immediate impact player.

The Rebels wide receiver room is going to be depleted with Tre Harris, Jordan Watkins and, presumably, Juice Wells all departing.

Cayden Lee will be the returning leading producer and presumed WR1 before any transfer portal moves are made, starting next week. Noreel White will be a redshirt freshman and the expectation will be for him to follow in Lee’s footsteps and take a step forward in his progression.

There is a spot for Cunningham to come in and find a role in the passing game, though depending on what receivers come via the portal he could also follow White’s path and redshirt next Fall.

Either way, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is very high on Cunningham and the fact he was able to land the state’s top prospect for a third year in a row.

“He could be huge,” Kiffin said. “That was really big. He’s a great player. At one point looked like he was leaving the state and got him back. Great kid and great family and a position of need next year. We have very high expectations for him.
