Ole Miss still chasing a New Year's Six bowl berth in latest College Football Playoff rankings
The penultimate College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday and Ole Miss knows where its stands heading into Thursday’s regular season final against Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl.
An ugly bounce-back win over ULM after the loss at Georgia put the Rebels back on track for a double-digit win season and a second shot at history, yet that was about it.
Chalk reigned supreme last Saturday as most of the teams ahead of Ole Miss (9-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) in last week’s CFP Top 25 all won. More specifically Missouri avoided disaster with its comeback win over Florida.
The Tigers (9-2, 5-2) win keeps them ahead of the Rebels, for now, in the race for a New Year’s Six bowl berth and Tuesday’s CFP rankings back that up.

Ole Miss moved up one spot to No. 12 but the Tigers remained at No. 9.
Thursday’s showdown in Starkville is the Rebels last chance to get a win over a SEC opponent but Missouri plays at Arkansas on Friday to try and secure its spot. Currently Ole Miss is all but assured a landing spot in Orlando for the Citrus Bowl, according to this week’s latest bowl projections.
If the Rebels win back the Golden Egg trophy, which would be the third win over the Bulldogs in Lane Kiffin’s first four years at Ole Miss, then that gives them the chance to leapfrog Missouri if the Tigers stumble in Fayetteville on Black Friday.
Of course other dominoes could fall with non-SEC teams that would benefit Ole Miss, including Louisville losing to Florida State in the ACC title game next weekend.
