Ole Miss to play Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl
Ole Miss has its bowl destination will be spending the holidays back in the Lonestar State.
It was announced on Sunday that the Rebels (8-4) will take on Texas Tech (7-5) in the TaxAct Texas Bowl. The game will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston on Dec. 28 with a 8 p.m. CT kickoff.
Winding up in a bowl game in Texas is now where the Rebels saw its postseason going after a 7-0 start to the season. Closing out the season 1-4, including losing its last three games, was death blow to the Rebels chance at a second trip to a Florida in the last three seasons.
This will be the fourth time the Rebels and the Red Raiders have met in a bowl. The two teams met for the first time in 1986 in the Independence Bowl and then reunited in Shreveport, La. for the 1998 Independence Bowl with the Rebels taking both games.
“Our team is excited to get back on the field and compete against a premier program like Texas Tech in the TaxAct Texas Bowl,” said Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin in a statement. “We look forward to representing our university in the state of Texas and on this national stage.”
In 2009 the teams faced off in the Cotton Bowl, which was the last game played in the actual Cotton Bowl. The Rebels took that game, 47-34.

Ole Miss and Texas Tech have met six times overall with the Rebels holding a 4-2 advantage. The two regular season meetings took place in Oxford during the 2003 season and a neutral site game to open the 2018 season.

Despite the way the season ended Ole Miss is heading to a third straight bowl game.
The Rebels snapped a four-year bowl drought when it earned a berth to the Outback Bowl in the 2020 season. Last season Ole Miss returned to a New Year’s Six bowl, earning a berth to the Sugar Bowl after its first 10-win regular season.
Ole Miss has made it to a bowl game ever year of head coach Lane Kiffin’s first three seasons in Oxford.
