Ole Miss was the ‘right fit’ for slot receiver Jordan Watkins
When Ole Miss Wide Receiver Jordan Watkins was contemplating leaving Louisville for “greener pastures” by entering the transfer portal, he was only looking for one thing.
“The right fit – that’s what it was all about,” said Watkins, who is partially sponsored by LeBlanc & Associates CPA out of Metairie, LA. “Ole Miss had produced some big time receivers and it just looked like the right opportunity for me.”
Watkins has been the benefactor of the transfer portal and believes that it is a good thing for players and here to stay.
“I think it is a good thing, the transfer portal, and I like the way Ole Miss has handled it. We have some great players in here now from the portal and are still looking for some more,” explained Jordan, who is partially sponsored by Bluff City Advisory out of Memphis with former Rebel Ben Still as an associate. “I think what makes the portal special is that all the guys who have come here through the portal are connected and we all know what we have to mesh and go for our common goal of winning.”
Jordan believes he was brought in to be the slot receiver and the success former Rebel Elijah Moore, now a New York Jet in the NFL, had was a factor in his decision.
“Elijah put up some great numbers and the fact that Elijah caught so many passes out of the slot and the fact the coaches told me they were going to use me in that position just made it easier to decide,” he noted.
The receivers more than any other positions are affected by who the quarterback will be. Jordan does not see a whole lot of difference in Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart.
“It’s a real close competition. I’m excited about Saturday (Grove Bowl) and watching both of them get out there and kind of do their own thing,” he continued. “I think their games are very similar. Jaxson seems a bit more relaxed personality-wise, but both are all business after the ball is snapped.”

Jordan’s goal is to prove himself as one of the main receivers on the team.
“I know we have all made progress this spring, but we will need to continue getting better and I need to continue getting better and showing my coach (Derrick Nix) that I can handle the load,” he stated. “I also want to see the offense put on a show in the spring game.
“The spring game is the cherry on the top of the cake. It’s time to show what we can do and how far we have come in spring. A good spring game will give us some confidence and help us get further acclimated to what’s in front of us. I think the spring game is a benefit to the team and I believe we will have a good one this Saturday.”
Watkins has missed some time this spring with an injury but anticipates being able to play in the Grove Bowl.
“I should be ready to go. It’s football and nagging injuries happen, but hopefully I got mine behind me and I’ll be ready to go this fall,” said Watkins. “Some of the receivers have been banged up and we are working with several quarterbacks so it’s been challenging this spring.
“We’ve had some guys who haven’t played much step up and make plays, but we need to get more consistency. That’s what spring is for. I’ve had to step up as well when I have been healthy. It’s been fun but challenging. Also, we are playing against a really good defense that has stayed relatively healthy all spring.”
