There is only one meeting between the Ole Miss women’s basketball team and Mississippi State’s this season and it took place on Sunday in Starkville.

Without an opportunity to get a final meeting against the in-state rival back in Oxford, Madison Scott was going to make sure she made the most of her last game inside Humphrey Coliseum.

The senior forward finished with a season-high and game-high 30 points, putting Ole Miss on her back and led it to a 71-63 win. Scott also finished with four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.

She was not to be denied on Sunday.

“I was aggressive. More aggressive than I’ve been being. So, I think, that was a result of it,” Scott said after the game.

For Ole Miss (13-5, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) it was the first back-to-back wins in conference play this season. According to ESPN’s Charlie Creme the winner of today’s game was due to get a bump in his next ‘Bracketlology’ update to a 7 Seed.

The game itself was kind of a microcosm of how the first five SEC games have gone for the Rebels. Each quarter reflected how the wins have come and how the losses occurred.

A slow start in the first quarter with cold offense ended with Ole Miss warming up to get back to within a point. The second quarter then saw the patented Yolett McPhee-McCuin defense kick in, keeping Mississippi State (15-5, 2-4) to only nine points and the Rebels took a five-point lead into halftime.

Defense carried over to the second half, causing 14 Bulldog turnovers and the offense scored 16 of its 37 second-half points off them.

Freshman guard Sira Thienou continued her breakout debut season. She recorded nine of the Rebels 16 steals. She finished with 10 points, four assists, three rebounds and a block.

“In our opinion Sira’s freshman of the year in the SEC,” McCuin said. “She shows up every single game and always in a different way. …This kid’s phenomenal.”

Starr Jacobs finished with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds and three steals. Kennedy Todd-Williams scored 11 points to with five rebounds

Sunday’s win helped steady what has been a rocky season, especially since the calendar turned to January. Pocketing another SEC road win helps a NCAA Tournament résumé that already looks good metric-wise with the results already happened and what is still to come over the next 10 SEC games.

Next up for Ole Miss after another week off is No. 7 Texas (17-2, 4-1) coming to Oxford for a 2 p.m. CT tipoff on January 26. The game will air on ESPN.
