Pete Golding nominated for Broyles Award as Ole Miss sits Top 20 in total defense
Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding is a Broyles Award nominee, which is awarded to the nation’s top assistant coach, it was announced Tuesday.
Ole Miss’ defense leads the nation in sacks (49), tackles for loss (108) and yards per rush allowed (2.39), while leading the SEC in rushing defense (87.5 yards per game; FBS No. 2) and rushing touchdowns allowed (6; FBS No. 3).
The Rebels are second nationally in rush defense and 18th in total defense, led by the superb play of defensive linemen like Walter Nolen. Nolen is one of three finalists for the 2024 Outland Trophy. Ole Miss linebacker Chris Paul Jr. has been named one of five collegiate finalists for the 2024 Butkus Award as well.
The 65 nominees in this year’s class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.

This week, Ole Miss takes on Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Friday. Head coach Lane Kiffin is hoping to stay on the winning side of the rivalry. He’s won four of five tries in the game. This year, Jeff Lebby’s team moves quickly on offense.
“They go really fast on offense. I think the quarterback can move around and make some plays,” Kiffin said on Monday. “I do think they have some really good skill on offense that’s quick and explosive. We’re going to have to play really good defense and get lined up.”
