The 2023 college football season hit Week 7 this weekend and for Ole Miss it was a chance to kick its proverbial feet up, lick wounds and heal up for the final stretch.

An open date ended up arriving on the schedule at the perfect time for the Rebels (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference). After going 2-1 on its opening three-game stretch to conference play Ole Miss needed to come up for air and catch its breath as it appears there is much to play for over the next six weeks.

Plenty of upsets and chaos ensued while Ole Miss did not have to worry about dropping any of the momentum it garnered to start the month of October, but it also did not provide any added momentum when it came to the latest Top-25 rankings on Sunday.

With Southern California and Oregon taking losses inside the Top 10, Ole Miss was not the benefactor of a bye-week bump outside of a small nudge up in USA Today’s Coaches Poll. The Rebels moved up a spot to No. 12 while staying put at No. 13 in this week’s Associated Press Poll.

Potential scares by No. 11 Alabama and even an early wake up call – scare for No. 1 Georgia by Vanderbilt’s fast start did not result in any major shakeups in the Southeastern Conference. Though Missouri’s 38-21 win over then No. 24-Kentucky did move the Tigers to No. 20 in both polls and pushed the Wildcats out of them.

But Ole Miss can now get back into the driver’s seat after pulling over at a rest area for the weekend and start controlling its own destiny once more. That begins on October 21 at Auburn (6 p.m. CT/ESPN), who is coming off the 48-18 blowout loss in Baton Rouge at the hands of No. 19 LSU.
