Saturday’s loss was one that felt inexplicable with the way the Ole Miss men’s basketball team was trending and how Mississippi State was trending.

Yet the Bulldogs came to Oxford and beat the Rebels by 10, sweeping the season series and also stunting the upward trajectory Ole Miss was on regarding seeding for the NCAA Tournament.

Monday’s new rankings reflected this, too, with the Rebels (19-7, 8-5 Southeastern Conference) dropping five spots in the Associated Press poll to No. 24 and fell outside of the Coaches Poll to essentially No. 26 as the first team receiving votes.

Ole Miss has been ranked all but one week of the 2024-25 season. Another example of the progress made by Chris Beard in his second year as head coach.

In the NET rankings Ole Miss fell four spots to No. 25 on Sunday after the loss, remaining there in Monday’s update. They are off this week and will play at Vanderbilt (17-8, 5-7) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

“You look forward to the break after a win. You dread the break after a loss,” Beard said on Saturday.

The SEC continues to be well-represented in the AP Poll with eight teams still inside the Top 25. Five of those are inside the Top 10 and three teams inside the Top 5, starting with No. 1 Auburn after beating then No. 2 Alabama this past weekend in Tuscaloosa.
