Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin shake hands after the game as Auburn Tigers take on Mississippi Rebels at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. Mississippi Rebels defeated Auburn Tigers 28-21.

A month ago things felt bleak and the season’s outlook dire after Ole Miss lost at Alabama to open up conference play, but what a difference four weeks and a few wins makes.

The Rebels knocked off Auburn, 28-21, at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night for its third straight victory over a Southeastern Conference opponent and suddenly everything still to play for.

A turnaround such as this is one Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin anticipated having after the loss to the Crimson Tide. He has compared this season to the one of 2021 where the Rebels bounced back after the loss at Tuscaloosa and finished with the program’s first 10-win regular season.

Similar outcomes are still in play this year after the win over the Tigers and the latest Top 25 rankings are reflecting it. A win over a SEC Western Division opponent should carry some weight but there was not enough turmoil ahead of Ole Miss (6-1, 3-1 SEC) to move them up dramatically this week

Ole Miss did move up a spot in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls updated rankings released on Sunday. The Rebels moved up to No. 12 in the AP Poll and to No. 11 in the Coaches Poll and continue the climb towards a Top-10 ranking after falling back to No. 20 a month ago.

Two-time defending national champion Georgia remained at No. 1 with its schedule bye week. Ole Miss has a big opportunity in Athens to play another No. 1 team in three weeks on November 11. The Bulldogs are currently the only marquee opponent left of of the remaining five games on the Rebels schedule, unless one still counts Texas A&M coming to Oxford in two weeks.

Ole Miss will look to improve its postseason standing on Saturday and get its seventh win of the season with Vanderbilt coming to Oxford for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
