Poll Position: Ole Miss just misses being consensus Top 10 after wild bye week
Ole Miss got its chance to prop its feet up and take a load off after getting through nine straight weeks of games — the only Southeastern Conference team to play nine straight — and enjoy a loaded Week 10 schedule on Saturday.
There was not too much chaos but not enough movement within the Top 10 for Ole Miss (8-1, 4-1 SEC) to move back up as a consensus Top 10 team on Sunday heading into Week 11 and a monster SEC West showdown.
Next Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was primed to be for the SEC West lead if Alabama knocked off LSU on Saturday night at Baton Rouge, but the Tigers pulled off the overtime win and seemingly killed Ole Miss’ SEC West title hopes. At the very least put them on life support.
Instead, the Rebels and Crimson Tide (7-2, 4-2) will now play to keep pace with LSU for sole possession of second place in the West. The two teams are set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS next Saturday.
Georgia hosted Tennessee is the battle of No. 1s — in different polls — in essentially the de-facto SEC East title game. The Bulldogs won 27-13 in dominant fashion, ending the orange wave of momentum the Volunteers had brewing all season.

With all of that and Clemson being routed by unranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Ole Miss moved up and even jumped ahead of Alabama and the Tigers in both the Associated Press and USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll.
Ole Miss is ranked No. 9 in the Coaches Poll and stayed at No. 11 in the latest Associated Press Poll.
In the latest Coaches Poll the top five teams saw a little change with Georgia (9-0, 6-0) staying at No. 1 followed by Ohio State (9-0) and Michigan (9-0), who moved up a spot to No. 3 with Tennessee (8-1, 4-1) dropping two spots to No. 5 behind TCU (9-0) who moved up three spots to No. 4.
The latest Associated Press Poll mirrored the Coaches Poll’s top five with the Bulldogs, Buckeyes, Wolverines, Horned Frogs and Volunteers rounding it out.
The Rebels are No. 11 in the College Football Playoff rankings, which unveiled its first Top 25 last Tuesday. There will be plenty of movement in the second week of rankings this coming Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
