Poll Position: Ole Miss stays steady after Week 1 rout of Furman
There was a lot of chalk in the first full week of the 2024 college football season, unless you are Florida State, and Ole Miss was among those who took care of business.
A season-opening 76-0 win over Furman that saw the Rebels offense be the best in the country to start off a campaign aimed at making the College Football Playoffs was as good a start as any team could ask for.
While things were status quo in Oxford so were they around the rest of the country for other teams in the Top 10. Despite the lack of Top 10 upsets there was a shift in the polls due to said Top 10 teams struggling to put a win away.
Georgia, Notre Dame and Southern California (USC) all had wins over ranked opponents to start the season. The Irish and Trojans were below Ole Miss in the preseason rankings and the former leapfrogged the Rebels to No. 5 in the AP Poll.
Oregon’s ‘ugly’ win over Idaho caused the Coaches Poll votes to drop them three spots, moving Ole Miss to No. 5 by default.

Ole Miss (1-0) remained at No. 6 in the Associated Press Poll heading into Week 2 and a contest against Middle Tennessee State (1-0).
In fact, the Top 5 remained steady with the Bulldogs at No. 1 then Ohio State, Oregon, Texas and Alabama rounding things out.
Polls could get a tad more interesting next week with the Longhorns traveling to Ann Arbor this weekend to play defending national champion Michigan. That is the only marquee matchup among the Top 5 as Georgia hosts Tennessee Tech while the Buckeyes host Western Michigan, the Ducks host Boise State and the Tide host South Florida.
