Neither faced a marquee opponent, but Ole Miss’ football and men’s basketball teams still found a way to make the weekend more than memorable.

Chris Beard’s basketball Rebels snuck past Sam Houston State to stay perfect through four games. Beard is looking to make Ole Miss the fourth separate program he’s led to the NCAA Tournament since 2016, the same year the Rebels moved over from Tad Smith Coliseum to their new home, the SJB Pavilion.

The Rebels played in Tad Pad on Friday for the first time since the move. They’d previously spent 50 years and 700 games there, reaching the NCAA Tournament eight times, including the Sweet 16 in 2001. Ole Miss also used the game to honor all-time great Rebel coach Rob Evans.

“Tonight for us was more than a basketball game,” Beard said afterwards. “It was honoring one of the all-time greats. So cool to have former players back in town (Thursday) and tonight. Wish we would have played better for coach.

“I’ll say this: There’s a lot of emotion attached to this game, and that’s good, because we’re going to have to play in a lot of emotional games as we build the program to get it to the point where we want it.”

Lane Kiffin’s No. 13-ranked football Rebels improved to 9-2 (5-2 SEC) on the year with a 35-3 win over ULM. The Rebels finished the regular season a perfect 7-0 at home for just the second time in program history.

They’ll be going for their second-ever 10-win regular season as they close out the year at in-state rival Mississippi State on Thanksgiving night. Two more wins (including the bowl game) would result in the first-ever 11-win season for Ole Miss.

“Need to work to get this trophy back,” Kiffin said. “We screwed it up last year, so now we have a short week to get ready for that. “
