Rebel Roundabout: P-Willy’s gold fit; Ole Miss’ Pegues recognized for ‘Good Works’
Ole Miss senior defensive tackle JJ Pegues is one of 178 nominees for the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
The team, established in 1992, is now in partnership with the Wuerffel Trophy. Pegues has been a nominee in back-to-back years. He was on the 2023 watchlist for the Wuerrffel, named for Danny, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for the Florida Gators. The trophy’s annual recipient is an FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field.
Pegues is an Oxford native, one-time Auburn transfer and now-fixture for the Rebel defense. Pegues started 12 of 13 games for Ole Miss last season. The Rebels won a program-record 11 games.
They have the sixth-best odds to win the national championship in 2024-25. Pegues set new career-highs in tackles (42), tackles for loss (8.0), sacks (3.5) and pass breakups (4). He added two QB hurries.
He’s a member of the SEC’s Leadership Council and Community Service Team, as well as the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Other community events for Pegues include his yearly Adopt-a-Basket and Feed the Sip programs; Ole Miss’ Reading with the Rebels; local Boys and Girls Club and (CASA) Back to School events; CASA’s Adopt-a-Child program; the Tim Tebow Foundation’s ‘Night to Shine’; former Rebel KD Hill’s Back to School Bash; the AJ Brown Foundation; Ole Miss’ water collection drive; and multiple cleanup and donation efforts state-wide.
