Report: Georgia to hire Ole Miss' Yolett McPhee-McCuin as next women's basketball coach
After taking Ole Miss women’s basketball program to its first NCAA Women’s Tournament appearance in 15 years, Yolett McPhee-McCuin could be on the move to her next SEC program.
Mike Robinson of The Ball Out reported on Wednesday that Georgia plans to hire McCuin and that a deal could be officially done imminently.
Texas A&M announced the hiring of current Georgia women’s head coach Joni Taylor to take over the Aggies’ program on Wednesday, which could have started the dominoes falling and leading to McCuin’s exit from Oxford.
McCuin just completed her fourth year with the Rebels after taking over in 2018. Two years ago the Rebels went 0-16 in SEC play and this year turned it their best conference record with the second 10 SEC-win season in program history.
The Rebels ended their season last Friday with a first round loss to South Dakota in the NCAA Tournament. Afterwards, McCuin was grateful to the seniors who stayed the course and helped get the program to where it is, but also spoke of the future with the Rebels.

“This is the beginning. And I thanked our seniors, because they came and did what I asked them to do, help me jumpstart this thing,” McCuin said. “So, just how I said it’s NCAA Tournament or bust, I can boldly say that we’ll be back.”
Coming off its run to the WNIT Championship game last March, McCuin received a contract extension and a raise that pays her up to $750,000 a year.
If McCuin does head to the Bulldogs, the search for the next head coach will begin. One place to start would be current Cincinnati head coach Michelle Clark-Heard, who was a finalist for the job when McCuin was hired.
Whoever is the head coach will be tasked with rebuilding after the departure of Shakira Austin, who is expected to be a lottery pick in next month’s WNBA Draft, and others including LaShonda Monk.
