Former Ole Miss football star Chris “Creek” Mitchell, the first player to win the Chucky Mullins Courage Award and wear the coveted “38” jersey, will be the recipient of the proceeds of Sigma Nu’s Charity Bowl this year, it was announced recently.

Sigma Nu began the Charity Bowl in memory of Chucky Mullins and has raised over $3,000,000 since its inception. The Charity Bowl is the largest Greek fundraiser in the country. The original idea was to help athletes/people who had been paralyzed, but the charity has also championed other causes as well, such as the William Magee Institute and The Manning Family Fund last year.

Chris, who was paralyzed in an accident that injured his legs, spine, arms and head in 2020, will be honored at Ole Miss this Saturday at the Ole Miss-Arkansas football game. His injuries were life-threatening, but he is still fighting and needs assistance.

If there is one thing Rebel Nation is known for, it’s coming through when one of its own needs financial help.

Creek, who is known for “The Hit” in 1990 versus Arkansas that saved the game for the Rebels as the Hogs were driving for the winning score, was surprised by some Ole Miss officials, former teammates and former Rebel players last Christmas with a wheelchair and some other necessities, but the Charity Bowl has something bigger in mind. Sigma Nu has a goal of $300,000-plus to put in trust for Chris’ long-term care.

“We are hoping to break all previous records of fundraising for Chris. We raised over $300,000 last year with the Charity Bowl,” said Mark McLemore, a former Sigma Nu who is still active in fraternity affairs. “The university and M Club are behind this effort and that always gives us a big boost in our efforts.”

Quite a few Ole Miss teammates and at least three former Chucky Mullins Award winners will be in attendance to help honor Creek this weekend.

Former recipients of the Mullins Award who will be at Ole Miss are Johnny Dixon, Tre Southerland and Jeff Carter, but also in support of Chris will be Shawn Cobb, Todd Sandroni, John Darnell, Shawn Sykes, Robert Smith, Clint Conlee, Pat Coleman, Deano Orr, Randy Baldwin and Pete Harris to name a few.

Sigma Nu has already set up a Go Fund Me page for this year’s Charity Bowl.
