Lane Kiffin and his staff have stuck to their methodical nature and are operating at their own pace on the recruiting trail in the 2023 cycle. But now things might be cranking up as they’ve added another On3 Consensus four-star in Moss Point (Miss.) defensive lineman Jamarious Brown on day one of Juice Fest 2022.

The 6-foot-3, 270 pound prospect from the Magnolia State joins fellow On3 Consensus four-stars Suntarine Perkins, Brycen Sanders, Marcel Reed and Ahmad Brown. Those five blue chip recruits along with three-star Parish Episcopal School (Tex.) safety Daniel Demery now have Ole Miss ranked 26th in On3’s Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings.

Brown chose the Rebels over notable offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Tennessee and Texas, among others.

The country’s 34th-ranked defensive lineman took unofficial visits to Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida and Florida State but the No. 5 prospect in Mississippi took several trips to Oxford and ultimately chose the Rebels due to his tight-knit relationship with director of recruiting strategy, Kelvin Bolden, and defensive line coach Randall Joyner.

The On3 Consensus four-star lineman from Moss Point, Miss., is ranked the No. 252 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 34 defensive lineman and as the No. 5 rising senior in Mississippi.

On3’s analysts hold him in much higher regard, ranking him the 102nd overall prospect in the 2023 class, the 15th defensive lineman in America and the No. 2 overall recruit in the Magnolia State.

SPIRIT’S TAKE

As a junior, Jamarious Brown was a key cog for the Tigers 8-4 campaign, making 84 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss and five sacks. He also forced three fumbles and was a spark plug on offense, toting the rock for 15 times in short yardage for 83 yards and seven touchdowns.

However, Brown will find his home on defense once he arrives in Oxford. There, he will be able to flex his athleticism all across the front seven. He has the frame to grow into an interior lineman but he also has the quickness and violent hands to make a difference on the edge against offensive tackles.

When I turn on the tape, I see a lot of current Rebel Cedric Johnson in his game. He has a similar build and a game that is eerily similar. He can use his foot speed and leverage well in space against tackles but he can also bull rush you and get under the pads and into the backfield before you know what hit you.

Brown is certainly someone who could factor into the rotation in 2023 but he’s also a guy who could benefit from a year of learning the system, getting into the strength and conditioning program and maturing physically with the tutelage of Joyner before being a household name in Chris Partridge and Maurice Crum’s defense.
