Sunday Leftovers: Ole Miss football brought the fireworks in its annual spring showcase
Ole Miss on Saturday held its annual Grove Bowl spring game, with quarterback Jaxson Dart’s Red team pulling out a 53-52, last-second win. The Rebels will get back to work twice more this week to fulfill their 15 allotted practices.
“I thought it was a pretty exciting day,” Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said afterwards. “A lot of stuff going on. Players making plays, competitive. We moved the scoreboard there at the end just to have some fun and make it a one-score game instead of a two-score game. That was good to see Jaxson and his team respond to that and go down (and score). Pretty neat. A lot of players making plays. A lot of work to do still.
“I was glad they were able to have fun, as well as get some good work done.”
Dart on the day completed 18 of 37 passes for 302 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
He had three carries for 19 yards.
Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders was 19 of 27 for 265 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in leading Blue. He also had six carries for 72 yards and another score, while LSU transfer Walker Howard was 11 for 13 for 184 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He split time between both squads and added 29 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries.
Running back Quinshon Judkins (Red) had 91 all-purpose yards (47 rushing, 44 receiving). His primary backup, Ulysses Bentley (Blue), had a scrimmage-high 83 rushing yards on 10 attempts. He scored once.

Walk-on running back Fred McAfee (Red) wasn’t far behind Bentley, however.
McAfee finished with 80 yards and a touchdown on his 15 totes. Veteran receiver Jordan Watkins (Red), back from an injured hamstring, had eight catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. Watkins was on the receiving end of the scrimmage-winning two-point conversion as well.
Michael Trigg (Blue) blew up for nearly 140 yards and a touchdown on his nine catches. JJ Henry also went over the century mark (seven catches, 108 yards) for Blue. Chris Marshall, the transfer wide receiver from Texas A&M, had four catches for 89 scoreless yards. Brandon Buckhaulter had five catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.
John Saunders, the transfer defensive back from Miami (Ohio) led all Rebels with 13 tackles. He also recorded an interception on Sanders. Saunders was moved to safety from cornerback early on in spring.
