Donte Moncrief doesn’t seem old enough to be the honorary captain for Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl.

But Moncrief’s final game as a Rebel came a decade ago, and while he’s still training, he’s out of football after seven years in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers and others.

“Anything for Ole Miss,” Moncrief said. The Rebels take on Penn State for the first time in history on December 30 at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN. “Being able to walk those guys out of the tunnel and through the coin toss, I got about three more plays left in me to do a little something.”

These days, Moncrief is a father of five living in Florida.

However, he will forever be remembered as an all-time Ole Miss great. Moncrief, a former four-star recruit from Raleigh, was a record-setting Rebel receiver. He starred for Ole Miss from 2011-13 and finished with 156 receptions for 2,371 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Moncrief still holds the program records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. He was an All-SEC and All-American selection as a Rebel. Moncrief, as a senior, had a school-record-tying five 100-yard receiving games. He totaled 113 yards on six receptions in a win in the Music City Bowl. Moncrief finished the year with 59 receptions for 938 yards and six touchdowns.

“(Ole Miss) is home for me,” Moncrief said. “That place molded me and showed me a lot. If I can help guys get there, see that and just understand that, man, everybody says a lot of negative things about Oxford. When you get there and you actually see the people and get around the guys, it’s different.

“If Oxford doesn’t feel like home to you, you didn’t go at the right time.”
