Last week sucked. But the loss at Florida doesn’t negate the fact Lane Kiffin has built a winner at Ole Miss.

In this edition of ‘The Flagship,’ powered by College Corner and Homefield Apparel, the Ole Miss Spirit’s Zach Berry discusses the Rebels’ portal success and high school recruiting and why you should STILL be excited.

The recruiting visitors are sure to be out when No. 14 Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3 SEC) hosts in-state rival Mississippi State (2-9, 0-7) Friday at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

Will five-star quarterback Deuce Knight show up? He’s ranked as the No. 2 prospect in Mississippi, behind only five-star wide receiver and Ole Miss commit Caleb Cunningham.

As for the action on the field, Mississippi State has struggled in its first season under new head coach and former Rebel offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. The Bulldogs’ only wins this season were over Eastern Kentucky and UMass. Notably, they were competitive against Georgia and Texas A&M, falling only by 10.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State will be meeting for the 121st time in history. The series dates back to 1901. The Rebels hold a 65-49-6 advantage and have won three of four under head coach Lane Kiffin.

EGG BOWL HISTORY

Friday will serve as the 97th edition of the ‘Battle of the Golden Egg.’ The schools began playing for the trophy in 1927.

Ole Miss is 59-30-5 in Egg Bowl games. The Golden Egg was first proposed by members of Sigma Iota, an Ole Miss honorary society, to be awarded in a dignified ceremony.

The idea was born from an incident in 1926. Ole Miss snapped a 13-game losing streak in the rivalry. Rebel fans stormed the field in Starkville, essentially sparking a riot on Scott Field.

The trophy was approved the following year. The Rebels won the first Egg Bowl, 20-12, on Thanksgiving Day in Oxford in 1927.
