In this edition of The Flagship, a part of the Talk of Champions podcast network, Ben Garrett (Ole Miss Spirit/On3) is joined by Rebel baseball hitting coach Mike Clement to update the Rebels’ progress over now three weeks of intrasquad scrimmages.

The Rebels have three scrimmages left, including a Sunday tilt against Memphis at 1 p.m. CT. All fall exhibitions and scrimmages are free and open to the public. Parking, wherever available, is also free.

Ole Miss and Jacksonville State last week played 14 innings. The Rebels won going away — in what was the team’s first scrimmage against outside competition this fall.

Ole Miss won its first-ever national championship in 2022. However, the Rebels dropped to 25-29 (6-24 SEC) last season. In response, Clement and Co., in the off-season, brought in one of the nation’s best transfer classes, highlighted by FAU slugger and first baseman/corner outfielder Jackson Ross, Duke third baseman Andrew Fischer, Arizona State shortstop Luke Hill and Coastal Carolina left-hander Liam Doyle.

“I think it just solidified some thoughts from a coaching standpoint,” Clement said of the Jacksonville State scrimmage. “We’re now, from an offensive standpoint, 50 or 60 plate appearances into the fall, which is a lot. They’re going to end up with 75, some of them 80 plate appearances, which is a huge sample size for the fall.

The guys we’ve already talked about have flourished. We have some pretty good position battles going on. We probably have 11 hitters I really like, and that’s a good thing. That’s much better than eight and trying to fill in a spot.”
