No. 12 Ole Miss (4-1, 0-1 SEC) is facing a prove-it game at South Carolina (3-1, 1-1) Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

The Rebels have to prove Kentucky was the outlier for a team still bullish and all-in on its chances to make the expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff.

Ole Miss has more doubters than ever before. Juice Wells is going against his former team. Jaxson Dart is hoping to regain traction in the Heisman race; he went from the second-best odds last week (+500) to now +2000.

And that’s just for starters.

“Juice is a good player, but when you sit there and watch (Tre Harris), they threw him the ball 15 times Saturday,” South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said this week. “We better not be caught up in one player.

“We better be aware of him, then we better know what a weapon the tight end (Caden Prieskorn) is. The slot receiver, Cayden Lee, we recruited the heck out of him. He had a lot of targets. The running back (Henry Parrish, Jr.) had a lot of targets in the passing game.

“They have a lot of really good players we have to prepare for.”

Put simply, a lot is on the line in Columbia for the Rebels.

They couldn’t have mucked up their path any worse than with the Kentucky face-plant.

“I have been incredibly high on Ole Miss,” SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum said this week. “Their road got very, very nerve-wracking. (They’re) not fine. This is the best Ole Miss team in 60 years and they managed to lose to Kentucky.

“And I’m not dissing Kentucky. I know they took Georgia to the wire, but they still lost to South Carolina, and they’re not an upper-tier team. Ole Miss had no business losing to them.”

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait around to find out whether Ole Miss bounces back or not.
