Ole Miss slot transfer Jaylon Robinson

Former Oklahoma and UCF wide receiver Jaylon Robinson made it official and committed to Ole Miss on Sunday.

The Rebels ultimately landed him over Tennessee and Miami (Fla.), and the one-time On3 Consensus four-star prospect took visits to Ole Miss, Tennessee and TCU.

Robinson is ranked as the No. 11 wide receiver in the On3 transfer rankings. Georgia also showed interest, however, the Bulldogs were not able to get Robinson on campus. He instead shifted his focus, primarily, to the Rebels and Volunteers.

Robinson is the No. 2 wide receiver in the portal, trailing only Pittsburgh’s Jordan Addison, who, in 2021, won the Biletnikoff Award, which is handed out each season to the top wide receiver in college football.

Robinson had a huge season in 2020 after sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.

He hauled in 55 receptions for 979 yards and six touchdowns and earned first team AAC honors. His production a year later was down due to a knee injury, though he still appeared in seven games and caught 18 receptions for 322 yards and two touchdowns.

Robinson originally signed with Oklahoma in 2018.

He was the No. 449 recruit in the country coming out of high school and the No. 66 prospect in Texas, according to the On3 Consensus. The On3 Consensus is a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He signed with the Sooners over notable offers from Georgia, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston and SMU. During his one year in Norman, Robinson made just three catches for 28 yards.

SPIRIT’S TAKE

Robinson brings a skillset Ole Miss has missed in its offense since Elijah Moore’s departure two years ago.

Even more, the shifty Robinson adds an element that will be tough to defend alongside new transfer additions Michael Trigg (USC, tight end), Zach Evans (TCU, running back) and Ulysses Bentley IV (SMU, running back), among others.

Ole Miss lost its Top 3 receivers (Dontario Drummond, Braylon Sanders and Jahcour Pearson) off a team that was 10-3 last season, including the 10th all-time program appearance in the Sugar Bowl. The Rebels featured one of the most explosive offenses in the country, led by quarterback Matt Corral. Corral was recently a third-round selection of the Carolina Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft. Drummond and Sanders signed undrafted free agent deals with the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, respectively.

Robinson, then, will be counted on in a major way. While Ole Miss added Louisville transfer wide receiver Jordan Watkins in January and expects to pick up Malik Heath (Mississippi State) and, potentially, Deion Smith (LSU) in the coming weeks, Robinson is a zone-busting deep threat whose strongest trait is arguably his ability to take the top off of coverage. Ole Miss, before Robinson’s commitment, didn’t feature such a receiver on its roster.
