Ole Miss has had storylines aplenty this spring, among them an overhauled coaching staff under third-year head man Lane Kiffin.
Sam Carter, formerly of Arkansas, as cornerbacks coach in January. He took over for Terrell Buckley, who Ole Miss, earlier that month, mutually agreed to part ways with.
“He’s a great coach,” Ole Miss senior cornerback Deantre Prince, an exclusive NIL partner of the Ole Miss Spirit, said. “Treats us like we’re his kids and brothers at the same time.
“He’s a really great coach. He’s already teaching us a couple of things (and) helping critique our game just a little bit more. He’s talking to us about our film from last year and what we can do differently. He’s getting me to the next level, most definitely.”
Carter spent two seasons mentoring Razorback cornerbacks.
He helped lead Arkansas to a record of 9-4 in 2021, the program’s best mark since 2011. The Razorbacks tallied 26 total interceptions in Carter’s two seasons, the second most in the SEC behind only Alabama.

Cornerback Montaric Brown led the SEC and ranked fourth in FBS last season with five interceptions. Under Carter’s guidance, Brown became the first Razorback defender with five interceptions in a year since 2011 (Tramain Thomas). In 2020, Arkansas’ 13 interceptions were second most in the SEC and 13th most in FBS.
Carter joined the Razorbacks from Missouri, where he served as a defensive quality control and analyst for Barry Odom.
Carter helped the Tigers’ defense rank as one of the best in the nation, particularly in the secondary, in 2019. Missouri’s pass defense was sixth in FBS and second in the SEC, allowing only 179.3 yards per game.
Carter was wired for sound in a recent Ole Miss practice, in a video provided by Ole Miss Sports Production. The Rebels are set to close out the spring with the annual Grove Bowl game on Saturday. Check out the video below.
