WATCH: Andrew Fischer is Ole Miss’ first All-SEC DH/UTL honoree in nearly 20 years

Ole Miss baseball is in Hoover this week for the SEC Tournament. 

However long the Rebels stay will be the extent of their remaining games for the 2024 season. Ole Miss dropped each of its four must-win games last week to set aflame its long-shot NCAA Tournament hopes. 

The Rebels are poised to spend the postseason at home for the second straight year. They’ve won under 30 percent of their SEC games since their first and only national championship in the summer of 2022. Ole Miss and in-state rival Mississippi State face off Tuesday night in the tournament’s late game. 

The Rebels will be without team leader Ethan Lege. Lege stayed behind in Oxford after an X-ray Tuesday morning revealed the bone in his fractured thumb had moved. He’ll have surgery Wednesday to repair the fracture.

There is some positive Ole Miss baseball news, however.

— Ole Miss Baseball (@OleMissBSB) May 20, 2024 ">the SEC announced. He’s the 74th such honoree under Mike Bianco and the first Ole Miss designated hitter/utility player since Stephen Head in 2005. 

Bianco is nearing the end of his 24th season as head coach of the Rebels.

“He’s been super consistent throughout,” Bianco said of Fischer earlier this season. “One of the things I love about him is he wants to win more than anybody. He’s just a great, great competitor. He comes every single day to bring his best game offensively.”

Fischer, a sophomore, is in his first season with the Rebels after transferring in from Duke. 

He leads the Rebels in slugging percentage, hits, RBI, triples, total bases and home runs. He’s second in runs scored and third in walks and batting average. 

Fischer earlier this month became just the fourth Rebel in program history to hit 20 or more home runs. Tim Elko is the single-season record holder with 24. Fischer homered in four straight games earlier this month — a feat last pulled off by a Rebel in 2007.

Elko and fellow former Rebel Jacob Gonzalez — also on Monday — were reunited as teammates with the Birmingham Barons, the AA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. 

“He’s always impressive,” Bianco said of Fischer. “He’s a special talent and brings so much energy. A lot of power, and a guy that can really get some good swings off.”
