Ole Miss football on Tuesday held one of its final practices of the spring.

The Rebels wrap with the rebranded ‘Grove Bowl Games’ on Saturday, April 13 at 3 p.m. CT. Events include hot-dog-eating and dunk contests, as well as a team-wide 7-on-7 and more.

“I think if you think outside of the box and traditional way of doing things, which I think it’s well-known we do, over time the spring game isn’t much value,” fifth-year Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said. The Rebels last season won a program-record 11 games. “If you watch people and what they do, unless a coach is on the hot seat and wants to please the fans, very rarely do they run more than a few types of runs and schemes.

“I don’t know if the traditional spring game gives you very much from an evaluation standpoint. I think it was just kind of done because it used to be done that way in the book. NFL doesn’t do it that way.

The Ole Miss Spirit was on-hand at the Manning Center on a rainy morning in Oxford for the latest session for the Rebels

Included are some highlights from the action that took place.

“I think we’re progressing along really well,” Kiffin said. Hot-dog-eating champion Joey Chestnutt will be in town for the weekend. “Continuing to try to install our base schemes, but also things we’ve looked at in the off-season like we always do and implementing all these new players and a few new coaches. Really pleased with where we’re at.

“I don’t know about the tackling part because we’ve stayed away from that from a scrimmage standpoint. We’ll do that in the fall; much more (like) the NFL model that way. But very pleased where we’re at.”
