Ole Miss, on Saturday, and for just the second time through almost four full weeks of fall camp practices, will take to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a game-like, full-team scrimmage.

The Rebels will be back on their home turf exactly two weeks later to kick off the 2022 season against Troy.

However, they have no shortage of roster and depth-chart matters to resolve before they do, including a still-ongoing quarterback competition between Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer.

“I’m going to sound dumb and say I don’t know that, but I mean, I don’t know,” third-year head coach Lane Kiffin said, when asked about the quarterbacks after practice on Friday.

“Some days, it’s very close (and) some days, you think one. Some days, you can think the other. It’ll happen when it happens.”

Ole Miss has also reshuffled its offensive line.

Redshirt freshman Jayden Williams has started at left tackle in every practice since the first scrimmage, meaning veteran Jeremy James, considered by many as the best next-level (NFL) prospect of the group, is back at his old position at right tackle.

The fast rise of Williams, and subsequent move of James, has at least temporarily displaced decorated Western Kentucky transfer Mason Brooks.

Brooks, who played in 42 games over four seasons with the Hilltoppers, chose the Rebels over Auburn, Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and others in January.

He alternated reps at tackle and guard with the second team on Friday. Eli Acker and Caleb Warren are the starters at right guard and center, respectively. Acker is also the second-team center.

“We’re still getting our communication down and (offensive line) coach (Jake) Thornton is trying to work on different combinations and see who can do what at different positions,” James said, in a previous interview with the Ole Miss Spirit.

“I think it’s important to know they can switch me around wherever they need me and that some of the other top guys are versatile as well.”
