WATCH: Ole Miss' Jonathan Mingo is a one-man highlight reel and the newest Carolina Panther
Ole Miss has now had seven second-round NFL Draft selections in the last five years.
Jonathan Mingo — selected on Friday by the Carolina Panthers at No. 39 overall — is the fourth wide receiver taken in the round since 2019.
He’s in good company. AJ Brown, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, set records at Ole Miss. He’s one of the highest-paid (four years, $100 million) wideouts in the NFL, and the the Eagles last season reached the Super Bowl. However, they came up short against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
DK Metcalf signed a lucrative contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks last July. He’s locked into a new four-year deal worth $76.2 million. Elijah Moore was another record-setting Rebel and second-rounder of the New York Jets. He’s now with the Cleveland Browns.
Mingo joins former Alabama quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young in Carolina. The Panthers were one of Mingo’s many Top 30, pre-draft visits.

Mingo is the second Rebel taking in the second round in back-to-back drafts.
He follows EDGE Sam Williams (Dallas Cowboys). Mingo last season set a new Ole Miss single-game record for receiving yards (247) in a win over Vanderbilt. No other player in college football had more yards in a game in 2022. Mingo was also the team’s second-leading receiver with 861 yards and five touchdowns off 51 catches.

Now-former Ole Miss EDGE Tavius Robinson (fourth round, Baltimore Ravens) was the second Rebel off the board this draft weekend, which is in its final day (Saturday) and rounds (4-7).
Mingo drew favorable comparisons to Brown in pre-draft. Actually, Mingo (9.86) posted a better RAS (Relative Athletic Score) than Brown (8.78) coming out of college. They’re similar in build, though Mingo in pre-draft workouts bested Brown’s pre-draft numbers in the bench, 40-yard dash, 20 split, 10 split, vertical and broad jump.
The players posted identical short-shuttle times (6.34), but Brown had the better three-cone (6.12 to 5.34). He also had vastly superior college production on his side. Brown closed his Ole Miss career as the all-time leading receiving in Ole Miss history (2,984 yards). He had 12 100-yard receiving games.
As Mingo heads off to the NFL, let’s take one last look back at some of his junior-season highlights, courtesy of Ole Miss Athletics.
