The comments by Lane Kiffin were unique, to say the least, when he was asked about No. 19 Ole Miss becoming bowl eligible for the fifth straight season, every year under his tenure in Oxford, but they did have a point in there.

Despite Kiffin’s comments from three years ago when the Rebels were bowl eligible and wanting to change the mindset inside the Manning Center and the fan base of wanting more than just to play a 13th game each year, Saturday’s comment came across semi tone deaf.

Kiffin seemed to be poking fun of the fact the mindset in Oxford is now championship or the season is a failure. Something he mentioned as a goal when hired five years ago.

“We didn’t come here to be good. We came here to be great,” was the message Kiffin projected on the stage inside the SJB Pavilion in December of 2019.

But currently championships are kind of a long shot after two losses to Kentucky and LSU. Ole Miss could afford a pair of losses in the expanded College Football Playoffs format, but not two by mid-October.

Now, sitting at 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference, the CFP is looking more like a pipe dream three days before Halloween and what could be a disappointing trip to a Florida bowl game is currently on the horizon.

Something that would have been celebrated pre 12-team CFP expansion. But now any postseason game not included in the playoffs has kind of been tarnished in value, by no fault of the bowl game’s.

After beating Oklahoma on Saturday to get to that magic number of six wins, Ole Miss did not see much change in its postseason projections.

The ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa continues to be a favorite landing spot for the Rebels now, with projections to Texas and Las Vegas mixed in heading into Week 10 of the season.

Any of those games would be a major letdown to a season that was hyped up as the year Ole Miss was a serious contender and in the mix for a national championship run. There are still four games remaining, including No. 2 Georgia in Oxford in two weeks, that can reverse some of this fortune.
